Piercy Eyes A Prize, Even If FedExCup A Long Shot

By Steve DiMeglio | USA TODAY Sports

ATLANTA- Scott Piercy might have a better chance of winning the lottery than winning the FedExCup Playoffs.

But at least he has a chance.

Piercy, the longest shot to win the $10 million bonus that comes with the postseason championship, was the last of the 30 players to make it to The Tour Championship by Coca-Cola. But a 3-under-par 67 Thursday at East Lake Golf Club kept his fleeting hopes alive.

“My chances are slim to none, and I think Slim’s about to leave the building,” said Piercy, who has to win the Tour Championship and have Rory McIlroy finish in a tie for 29th or finish dead last, Tiger Woods sixth or worse, Nick Watney third or worse, Phil Mickelson tie for third or worse, and Brandt Snedeker and Louis Oosthuizen both tie for second or worse.

But Piercy is looking at the positives. If he wins, he gets a check for $1.44 million and moves to second in the FedExCup Playoffs, which comes with a $3 million bonus.

“That would be sweet,” Piercy said of the potential payout. “(To win the FedExCup) I need so much to go in my favor to do it. There are too many good guys up there that I think just block me out, even if I win. But my thought was to try to win this week, and get second, and I think that’s a realistic goal. If I play well, I think I have a good shot.”
